Local Competitor Analysis: How to Compare Yourself Fairly

A local competitor analysis compares your business with three to five rivals that customers actually choose between. Measure the same things for each: map pack position in your service area, Google Business Profile quality, review count and recency, website pages and speed, and listings. Then turn the gaps into a short, ordered list of fixes.

Who to compare yourself with

Pick three to five rivals that customers really choose between, which are not always the ones you assume. Find them by searching your main services in the areas you serve, from a customer’s location, and noting who appears in the map pack and the top organic results. Include one or two businesses that are nearer or bigger than you and at least one that is similar. If you are asking why one rival always beats you, start with our guide to why a competitor appears above you on Google.

Step by step

  1. List your five most valuable services and the areas you serve.
  2. Search each service in each main area, from the customer’s side, in a private window.
  3. Record who appears in the map pack and the top organic results.
  4. Choose three to five rivals that appear most often.
  5. Fill in the table above for each rival and for yourself.
  6. Mark where each rival beats you and by how much.
  7. Rank the gaps by effort and likely impact, and write the top five as actions.

Using a map rank grid

A map rank grid shows where each business appears across a grid of points on a map, which makes it a standard deliverable in local SEO tools (for example, Insites Local Grid). Because local results change with location, a grid is far more reliable than checking from one spot. Without a tool, you can approximate it by checking from five to nine places around your service area.

Turn the findings into a plan

Sort the gaps into three groups:

  • Quick wins: fix profile gaps, correct listings, add missing services and photos.
  • Medium effort: build a steady review process that follows the UK rules on review incentives, and clean up directories.
  • Longer work: add service and area pages and earn local mentions.

If your profile has been suspended, fix that first: see how to recover a suspended Google Business Profile. Then place the list into a 90-day marketing plan.

Do it yourself or get help

A first pass is well within reach of most owners. Get help when competitors are much stronger, you cover many areas, you lack the time, or you want the analysis repeated each quarter. Our website and marketing audit includes a comparison with your local rivals.

What not to do

  • Copy a competitor’s text or structure. It adds nothing and can hurt you.
  • Chase every competitor keyword. Focus on the services and areas that earn you money.
  • Post fake reviews, yours or about a rival.
  • Judge results from one search on your own phone.

Frequently asked questions

What is a local competitor analysis?

A structured comparison of your business with the rivals customers choose between, covering map results, Google profile, reviews, website, listings and mentions, ending in a ranked list of fixes.

How many competitors should I analyse?

Three to five is enough for most local businesses. More adds work without changing the conclusions.

How often should I repeat it?

A full analysis once or twice a year works for most businesses, with a quick check of the same searches each month.

What tools do I need?

You can start with private-window searches, each rival’s Google profile and PageSpeed Insights. Paid tools add map rank grids and ranking history.

Can I see my competitors’ traffic?

Not exactly. Paid tools give estimates, not exact figures. Compare the visible signals instead: reviews, profile quality, pages and listings.

What should I do first with the results?

Fix profile gaps and listing differences, because they are quick and cheap, then start a steady review process.
