The Best UK Business Directories for Local Citations

Start with the platforms customers and AI tools use most: Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places. Then add UK general directories such as Yell, regional newspaper directories, and one or two industry directories for your trade. BrightLocal ranks Apple Business Connect and Google Business Profile highest in its UK citation list, followed by regional news directories.

Why directories still matter

A citation is a mention of your business name, address and phone number on another site. BrightLocal’s 2024 Business Listings Visibility Study found that 31% of the top-10 organic results for an average local search are business directories. UK agencies also say Google reads these listings when it decides which business to show, and that AI tools treat mentions across several trusted sites as evidence a business is real. Nobody knows exactly which directories help most, so choose by relevance and accuracy, not volume.

Start with the big three

  1. Google Business Profile. The base for map results. See our setup checklist.
  2. Apple Business Connect. BrightLocal’s UK citation ranking puts it first.
  3. Bing Places. Microsoft’s equivalent of Google Business Profile. Several agencies report that ChatGPT draws on Bing-based search results, though this is not confirmed by a primary source. See how to appear in ChatGPT.

Industry directories

Trade-specific directories can bring relevant enquiries. BrightLocal’s list includes niche examples, such as Best Plumbers for plumbers. To find yours, search for your trade plus directory, and check trade bodies and accreditation schemes that publish a find a member list.

How to choose where to list

  • It is relevant to your trade or area.
  • A free listing is available.
  • The directory appears when you search for your own business name.
  • You can claim and edit the listing yourself.
  • It does not look like a spam network or a list of thousands of unrelated businesses.

How to list efficiently

  1. Write your master name, address and phone in one document. See what NAP is.
  2. Create each listing with exactly that wording. BrightLocal notes it can take 15 to 20 minutes per site.
  3. Add your website, categories and opening hours.
  4. Save every login in one place.
  5. Check consistency with the NAP consistency checker.

What this means for AI answers

Agencies say AI tools read the same listings and mentions that search engines do, and that consistent details across several trusted sites help. This is not confirmed by the AI companies, but accurate listings cost little and help in any case.
