Why Is My Website Slow on Mobile? 8 Causes and How to Fix Them
Websites are usually slow on mobile because of oversized images, too many plugins and scripts, cheap or overloaded hosting, heavy themes and tracking tags, and no caching. Test a page free with Google’s PageSpeed Insights, aim for a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, and fix the heaviest images and plugins first.

Test first
- Open PageSpeed Insights, enter a page address and read the mobile result.
- If your site is verified in Google Search Console, open the Core Web Vitals report to see how real visitors experience it.
- Test on a real phone on a mobile connection, not only on fast office wifi.
- Test your homepage and your most important service page, not just one.
Google’s threshold for a good Largest Contentful Paint is 2.5 seconds or less. For the full measures, read Core Web Vitals in plain English.
Eight common causes
1. Oversized images
Large photos uploaded straight from a camera or phone are the most common cause. UK agencies say image optimisation alone can cut load times substantially. Compress images, use modern formats such as WebP and set sensible dimensions.
2. Too many plugins and scripts
Sites accumulate plugins over time. Each can add code that loads on every page. Remove any you do not use and check what each adds.
3. Third-party tags and widgets
Tracking pixels, chat widgets and several analytics tools running together all add delay. Keep only what you use, and load the rest after the page appears.

4. Cheap or overloaded hosting
Slow servers delay everything. If your hosting is the cause, tuning the site will only help so much.
5. Heavy themes and page builders
Some themes and builders load large amounts of code for features you do not use. A lighter theme or leaner layout often helps.
6. No caching or content delivery network
Caching stores ready-made pages, and a content delivery network serves files from a place near the visitor. Both reduce wait times.
7. Fonts and icons
Several font families and weights add requests. Limit to what you use and load them efficiently.
8. Video, sliders and animations
Autoplaying video, large sliders and heavy animations slow the first screen. Use a still image and load video only when a visitor asks for it.

What to fix first
- Compress and resize the largest images on your homepage and key pages.
- Remove plugins and scripts you do not use.
- Turn on caching and, if appropriate, a content delivery network.
- Reduce third-party tags and widgets.
- Check hosting if the server is slow to respond.
- Test again and compare against the threshold.

How much does speed matter?
Slow pages lose visitors before they read anything, and Core Web Vitals have been a confirmed Google ranking signal since June 2021. Statistics on exactly how much speed affects conversions are widely repeated but vary by source, so measure the effect on your own enquiries. Our guide on why a website gets visitors but no enquiries shows how.
When to get help
Get a developer if the platform or theme is the problem, if hosting must change, or if you are not comfortable editing the site. For what a good local business site should include, see website design for local businesses. You can also try our website speed and mobile check.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my website slow only on mobile?
Phones have less processing power and slower connections than laptops, so heavy images and scripts show up more. A page that seems fine on office wifi can be slow on mobile data.
What is a good load time on mobile?
Google’s threshold for a good Largest Contentful Paint is 2.5 seconds or less. Aim for that on your key pages.
Does page speed affect my Google ranking?
Core Web Vitals have been a confirmed ranking signal since June 2021, alongside many other factors. Relevance still matters most.
Can I fix speed without a developer?
Often you can compress images, remove unused plugins and turn on caching yourself. Hosting and theme problems usually need a developer.
How do I test my website speed for free?
Use Google’s PageSpeed Insights, and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console if your site is verified.
