SEO or Google Ads First? How Local Businesses Should Decide
Choose Google Ads when you need enquiries soon and your tracking is ready; choose local SEO for lasting visibility, because it usually takes three to six months to move and six to twelve to show clear return. Many use both: ads for fast demand, SEO and a strong Google profile for steady growth.

Speed
Google Ads can start producing enquiries once the account, tracking and landing page are ready. Local SEO builds over time: UK agency pages commonly say local rankings begin to move in about three to six months and show clearer return in six to twelve. If you need enquiries this quarter, ads are the faster route. If you want visibility that keeps working, SEO is the longer game.
Cost
| Item | Local SEO | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Typical UK cost | About £300 to £1,500 a month for local retainers, most small businesses £500 to £900 | Click costs plus management. Most UK small businesses pay about £1.50 to £2.50 a click, with local trades £1.50 to £3.00 |
| Minimum useful spend | Varies by competition | For a one or two van trade business, about £400 to £800 a month is suggested for useful data |
| When you stop | Benefits usually continue for a time, but results can plateau without follow-up work | Clicks stop when spending stops |

Click prices vary by trade. A UK practical guide gives these typical ranges per click:
| Trade | Typical cost per click (£) |
|---|---|
| Plumber | 2 to 8 |
| Electrician | 2 to 7 |
| Roofer | 1 to 5 |
| Bathroom fitter | 1 to 4 |
| Locksmith | 3 to 12 |
| Damp proofing | 2 to 6 |
Source: Trade2Base. Legal services are far higher, at roughly £8.25 a click on average according to Whito.

Staying power
Good local SEO compounds: a verified profile, steady reviews, clear pages and consistent listings keep working. Ads switch off the moment the budget stops. That does not make ads worse; it makes them a tool for demand you want now.
A worked example
A UK trade guide gives this example: at £6 a click and 15% of clicks becoming an enquiry, each enquiry costs about £40. If half of those enquiries became jobs, each job would cost about £80 in clicks (our arithmetic, not from the source). Use your own numbers, but do the sum before you spend (Trade2Base).
Local Services Ads
For some UK trades, Google offers Local Services Ads, where you pay per lead instead of per click. They require verification, such as trade accreditation, insurance and ID, and are listed for plumbers, electricians and heating engineers among others. One UK source puts lead costs at about £10 to £60 (Whitehat SEO).
How to decide
- Start with Google Ads if you need enquiries soon, you have tracking and a good landing page, and each customer is worth enough to cover click costs.
- Start with local SEO if you can wait several months, your customers search on Google and Maps, and you want lasting visibility.
- Do both if you can afford it: ads for fast demand while the profile, reviews and pages build.

Before you spend on either
Set up tracking first. Without it you cannot tell which spend produced which enquiry. Our guide on why a website gets visitors but no enquiries shows what to measure. Frequently asked questions
Is SEO or Google Ads better for a small business?
Neither is better for everyone. Ads are faster, SEO lasts longer. Many local businesses use both, starting with whichever fits their cash flow and timeline.
How much should I spend on Google Ads?
For a one or two van trade business, one UK guide suggests at least about £400 to £800 a month to get useful data. Work out what a customer is worth and the cost per enquiry first.
Do Google Ads help my SEO?
No. Ads do not change your organic or map rankings. They can bring enquiries and data about which searches convert.
How long does local SEO take?
UK agency pages commonly say about three to six months to move local rankings and six to twelve for clear return, depending on competition.
What are Local Services Ads?
A Google format for some trades where you pay per lead rather than per click, after passing verification checks. Availability varies by trade and area.
Can I switch off ads once SEO works?
Often yes, but measure first. Pause ads gradually and watch whether total enquiries hold.
