A 90-Day Marketing Plan for a Local Business (Step by Step)

A 90-day plan works best in three phases. Month one builds foundations: tracking, a verified Google Business Profile and consistent listings. Month two fixes conversion: mobile pages, calls to action, forms and trust. Month three adds growth: reviews, helpful content and a first monthly report. Each month ends with a review of calls, enquiries and what to do next.

Before day one: record your baseline

Spend half an hour writing down where you start, so you can see progress later:

  • Enquiries per month: calls, forms and messages.
  • Website visitors per month.
  • Google Business Profile calls, direction requests and website taps.
  • Number of reviews and your average rating.
  • The three rivals who appear most often when customers search for you. See local competitor analysis if you want a fuller method.

Month 1: foundations (weeks 1 to 4)

  1. Week 1: set up measurement. Verify the site in Google Search Console, install Google Analytics 4, and record key events for form submissions and taps on your phone number. Our guide on why a website gets visitors but no enquiries explains the tracking check.
  2. Weeks 1 to 2: complete and verify your Google Business Profile. Use your real business name and address, choose the right categories, add services, hours and real photos. If a problem appears, see what to do if your profile is suspended.
  3. Weeks 2 to 3: make your details consistent. Use the same name, address and phone on your website, Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and the main directories for your trade.
  4. Weeks 3 to 4: pick one service and one area and make sure the page for it is clear, fast on a phone and has a visible call button.

By the end of month one you should have working tracking, a verified profile, matching listings and a first baseline report.

Month 2: fix conversion (weeks 5 to 8)

  1. Make the next step obvious on mobile: a tap-to-call button and a contact button in the header and footer.
  2. Speed up the heaviest pages: compress images, remove unused plugins and aim for a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less.
  3. Show real trust signals: reviews you can evidence, accreditations, photos of your work and team, your area and prices or ranges where possible.
  4. Shorten and test your forms: ask only what you need, check the confirmation and the notification.
  5. Reply faster: decide who answers enquiries and how quickly, and use an automatic acknowledgement if you cannot answer at once.

By the end of month two, compare enquiries and conversion rate with the baseline. Conversion fixes are often the quickest improvement you can make.

Month 3: growth (weeks 9 to 13)

  1. Start a steady review process. Ask every customer for an honest review and never reward it. See the UK rules on review incentives.
  2. Publish three helpful pages that answer questions customers ask: what it costs, how it works, and the common problems you fix. Clear, answer-first pages also help you appear in ChatGPT and other AI search tools.
  3. Produce your first monthly report with clicks from Search Console, profile actions, enquiries and rankings for a fixed set of searches. Our guide on whether your SEO is working lists what to include.
  4. Decide about paid ads. If you need enquiries sooner, compare SEO and Google Ads using your tracked cost per enquiry.

What to expect

A 90-day plan sets the foundations; it does not promise a result. UK agency pages commonly say local SEO takes about three to six months to move rankings and six to twelve to show clear return. Conversion fixes can lift the share of visitors who enquire sooner. Paid ads can bring enquiries faster but stop when spending stops. Judge month one on completed work, month two on conversion, and month three on early signs of growth.

Adapting the plan

  • Several areas or locations: repeat month one’s profile and listing work for each location and add a page for each.
  • Selling products online: add a product feed and channel set-up; see why products are disapproved in Google Merchant Center.
  • Seasonal trades: start month one two to three months before your busy season.

After day 90

Review the three monthly reports, keep what worked, drop what did not and write the next 90 days. Repeat the competitor check once or twice a year.

Frequently asked questions

What should a 90-day marketing plan include?

Tracking, a verified Google Business Profile and consistent listings in month one; mobile, trust, forms and reply speed in month two; reviews, helpful pages and a first report in month three.

Can I get results in 90 days?

You can improve the share of visitors who enquire, and see early movement in profile actions. UK agency pages commonly say local rankings take about three to six months to move.

What should I do first?

Set up tracking and complete and verify your Google Business Profile. Without them you cannot measure or be found.

How much should I spend?

There is no single figure. Work out what a customer is worth, then see the price guides on what a local SEO audit costs and SEO or Google Ads first.

Do I need an agency for this?

No. An owner can do much of month one and two alone. An agency helps if you lack the time or want a second pair of eyes.

What if I run out of time?

Do the three highest-value items: tracking, your Google profile and a visible call button on mobile.
