Google Merchant Center Setup for UK Sellers: A Practical Guide

To set up Google Merchant Center in the UK, create an account, verify and claim your website, add your business details, shipping and returns information, then upload a product feed or connect your shop platform. Products appear in free listings and, if you pay, Shopping ads, from the same feed. Check Diagnostics regularly so disapproved products are fixed quickly.

What you need before you start

  • A Google account you will keep, ideally with a business email address.
  • A website with clear product pages, prices, contact details, delivery and returns information and a secure checkout.
  • Product data: titles, descriptions, prices, stock, images and, where they apply, barcodes. See selling online from one product database.
  • Your shipping rates and returns policy.

Set-up steps

Google changes the names and order of its screens, so follow the labels you see and check Google’s current setup guide.

  1. Create a Merchant Center account with your business name, country and website.
  2. Verify and claim your website, so Google knows it belongs to you.
  3. Add your business details: contact information, and shipping and returns settings.
  4. Choose how you will supply products: a connection from your shop platform, a scheduled file, or manual entry for a few products.
  5. Add your products and check the first processing results.
  6. Open Diagnostics and fix any errors or warnings.
  7. Turn on free listings, and decide later whether to run Shopping ads.
  8. Set a routine to check Diagnostics at least weekly.

The data every product needs

Google publishes a product data specification. In general each product needs a unique ID, a clear title and description, a link to its page, an image link, a price, an availability status and, where they apply, a brand and a GTIN. Check the specification for your category, because required fields differ.

Free listings and Shopping ads

Free listings show your products in Google results without paying per click, and Shopping ads are paid. Both use the same feed, so a clean feed helps both. See why products are disapproved.

UK points: VAT and shipping

Specialist guidance says that for UK and EU feeds, prices in the feed and in page markup should include VAT, and that missing or wrong shipping or tax details cause disapprovals. The separate tax attribute has been phased out for EU and UK feeds. Check Google’s current requirements for your country.

After set-up: keep it healthy

  • Check Diagnostics regularly and fix problems the day they appear.
  • Sync price and stock from your shop automatically.
  • Review Google’s feed specification updates every quarter.
  • Request a review after fixes, where the tool offers one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Merchant Center free?

Setting up an account and listing products in free listings costs nothing. Shopping ads are paid per click.

Do I need a feed?

You need to supply product data, either through a feed from your shop platform, a scheduled file or manual entry for a few products.

How long until products appear?

We could not find a published guarantee. Products appear after Google processes and approves them, so check Diagnostics.

Do I need barcodes?

Often, where one exists for the product. See how to fix a missing GTIN.

Do prices include VAT?

For UK feeds, specialist guidance says yes. Check Google’s current requirement.

Can I use a plugin?

Many shop platforms offer feed plugins. Check that they match your product data and update price and stock automatically.
