How to Track Phone Calls From Your Website, Step by Step

To track phone calls, count taps on your tel link in Google Analytics 4 as an event, and add call tracking for calls that start elsewhere. Google Ads offers forwarding numbers for call conversions, and third-party tools such as CallRail integrate with GA4 and Google Ads. A phone tap shows intent, not a completed call, so match it with your own call records.

Why calls matter most

For many local service businesses, the phone call is the most valuable action on the whole website. A tap on a call button from a mobile visitor often signals a hot lead. Yet many sites record form submissions and miss calls entirely, so their numbers look worse than the truth.

Three call tracking methods: tap link, forwarding number and tracking service

Want a second pair of eyes? Clariti Digital can review your setup and show you what to fix first.

Set up tap tracking

  1. Make every phone number on your site a link that starts with tel, so a tap on a phone opens the dialler.
  2. In Google Tag Manager, create a trigger for clicks on links that start with tel.
  3. Create a GA4 event, for example `click_to_call`, that fires on that trigger.
  4. Test on a real phone using preview and debug view.
  5. Mark the event as a key event once it works. See GA4 events for small business.

Counting calls from ads

If you run Google Ads, you can use Google’s call tracking options to record calls as conversions. Check Google’s current instructions, because the options and requirements change.

If you use tracking numbers

A tracking number is a different phone number shown to some visitors. It lets a tool tell where a call came from. Be careful: your main number should still appear on your Google Business Profile and listings, so that your business details stay consistent. See what NAP is. Follow your provider’s guidance on how to set the numbers up.

Match taps with real calls

A tap shows intent, not a completed or answered call. Compare tap counts with your phone provider’s call log each month, and note the difference. This also shows how many calls you miss; see our missed call cost calculator.

Common pitfalls

  • Phone numbers on the site that are text, not links, so taps are not counted.
  • Counting both a GA4 event and an Ads call conversion for the same call. See why GA4 and Google Ads numbers differ.
  • Tracking numbers on listings, which can make your business details inconsistent.
  • Never testing from a phone.
  • Offline calls, such as customers who see your van and phone you, which no website tracking sees.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google Analytics track phone calls?

It can count taps on a phone link on your site. To count calls from other places, or completed calls, you need call tracking.

What is a call tracking number?

A separate number shown to some visitors or in some ads, so that a tool can tell where a call came from.

Does call tracking affect my Google Business Profile?

It can if tracking numbers replace your main number on listings. Keep your main number as the primary number on your profile and listings.

How do I know how many calls come from Google?

Your Google Business Profile insights show calls from the profile, and call tracking shows calls from ads and web visits. Compare them with your phone provider’s log.

Do I need to pay for call tracking?

Not to start. Tap tracking is free. Paid services add detail about the source of calls.
