Website Builder, Freelancer or Agency? How to Choose in the UK

A website builder suits a simple site on a tight budget, a freelancer suits a custom small site where you want direct contact, and an agency suits bigger or business-critical sites that need a team and ongoing support. UK guides put builders at about £1.99 to £259 a month, professional builds at £1,500 to £5,000 and agency builds at £5,000 to £10,000.

Website builder

Good for: getting online quickly and cheaply, with templates and hosting included.

Be aware: free plans have limited features and show ads, and on a free platform you build authority for the platform and not your business. Check whether you can export your site, and who owns the domain.

Freelancer

Good for: a custom design at a lower cost than an agency, with direct contact with the person doing the work. One UK developer argues a vetted freelancer gives better value for many projects between £3,000 and £12,000.

Be aware: a freelancer is one person. Ask about cover, ownership of files and what happens if they stop working.

Agency

Good for: larger sites, ecommerce, integrations and businesses that need ongoing support from a team.

Be aware: quotes can be hard to compare, and many agencies hide prices behind contact forms. Ask for a written scope and the three-year cost.

Questions to ask each route

  1. What is included, and what costs extra?
  2. Who owns the domain, hosting, design, code and content? See who owns your website.
  3. What are the running costs after launch, and is VAT included?
  4. How will the site perform on mobile, and how will enquiries be tracked?
  5. What happens if I want to leave?
  6. Who answers when something breaks, and how quickly?

Which to choose

  • Choose a builder if you need a simple presence now, your budget is tight and the site is not your main source of enquiries.
  • Choose a freelancer if you want a custom site and direct contact, and you have checked their examples and ownership terms.
  • Choose an agency if the site is central to your income, needs special features or you want a team and support.
Decision tree leading to builder, freelancer or agency

Whichever route you choose, judge the result by whether it brings enquiries. See website design for local businesses for what a good site includes, and what a small business website costs in the UK for the full price ranges.

Frequently asked questions

Is a website builder good enough for a local business?

For a simple online presence it can be. It may limit design, search optimisation and growth, so check what you need the site to do.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?

Often, for the same scope, but the difference depends on the people involved. Compare the written scope, ownership terms and support, not just the price.

When do I need an agency?

When the site is business-critical, needs custom features or integrations, or you want a team and ongoing support.

Can I switch route later?

Yes, if you own your domain and content and can get a copy of your files. Check this before you start.

What matters more than the route?

Whether the site is fast on mobile, easy to act on, trusted and tracked. See website design for local businesses.
