How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost in the UK in 2026?
Most UK small businesses pay about £1,500 to £5,000 for a professionally built website, with simple builder sites costing far less and bespoke agency builds costing £5,000 to £10,000 or more. Add roughly £500 to £2,500 a year for hosting, domain, security and updates. Prices vary between agencies, so compare what each quote includes, not just the total.

UK website costs at a glance
These ranges come from UK agency and comparison guides we reviewed in October
- They differ between sources, so use them as a guide and compare what each quote includes.
| Route | Typical cost | Best for | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website builder (Wix, Squarespace and similar) | About £1.99 to £259 a month | A simple online presence on a tight budget | Startups.co.uk |
| Freelancer, basic site | About £300 to £1,000 | A very small brochure site | Startups.co.uk |
| Professional small business build | About £1,500 to £5,000 | Local businesses that need enquiries | SwiftCase, Get You Online |
| Agency-built small business site | About £5,000 to £10,000 | Professional services that need a stronger brand | WebPop |
| Ecommerce (WooCommerce or Shopify) | About £5,000 to £15,000, more for custom work | Businesses selling products online | Kwiboo |
Several UK sources note that quoted prices are often before VAT, so add 20% when that applies.

What drives the price
- Pages and content. More pages and more writing cost more. One UK guide puts a professional copywriter at £150 to £500 per page.
- Design. A template costs less than a custom design built around your brand.
- Features. Booking, ecommerce, member areas and integrations add build and testing time.
- SEO structure. Planning page structure, headings and local pages before launch takes time that cheap builds skip.
- Photography and brand assets. Real photos cost more than stock but build more trust.
- Support. Training, updates and fixes after launch may be included or charged separately.

Ongoing costs most quotes leave out
A website is not a one-off purchase. UK sources quote a .co.uk domain at about £10 to £20 a year and shared hosting suitable for most small business sites at about £7 to £12 a month at renewal rates. Security, backups, updates and changes come on top. One UK agency suggests budgeting £500 to £2,500 a year for a typical small business site.
Free and very cheap sites have hidden costs too. On a free platform you build authority for the platform, not for your own business, and you often cannot move the site.
Who owns your website?
Ask before you pay. Ownership is not automatic, and it decides whether you can leave your supplier. Get these four answers in writing:
- Domain: is it registered in your name?
- Hosting: is the account in your name, with you holding the login?
- Design and code: are you given a licence or ownership, and can you take a copy?
- Content and images: who owns the text, photos and any paid licences?

Why quotes differ so much
Two quotes for the same word, website, can be priced very differently because planning, design, content, build and testing differ. A cheap site bought to do a much bigger job usually becomes expensive later. One UK developer says a quote below £500 for a complete business website is almost always a warning sign, and notes that many agencies hide their prices behind contact forms.
A useful test is the three-year question: what will this cost me over the next three years, including everything? An honest supplier can answer it.

Questions to ask before you sign
- What exactly is included: pages, writing, photography, SEO set-up and training?
- Who owns the domain, hosting, design, code and content?
- What are the monthly or annual costs after launch?
- Is VAT included in the quote?
- How long will it take, and what do you need from me and when?
- What happens if I want to leave or move the site?
- Will the site be fast on mobile and set up to track enquiries?
- Who do I call when something breaks, and how quickly will they respond?
What a website should do for the money
The goal is not a good-looking site but enquiries. If yours looks fine and nobody gets in touch, work through nine common causes of a website with no enquiries before paying for a rebuild. Frequently asked questions
How much does a small business website cost in the UK?
Most UK guides put a professionally built small business website at around £1,500 to £5,000. Builder sites cost far less, and agency builds run from £5,000 to £10,000 or more. Ecommerce usually costs more. Ranges differ by source, so compare what each quote includes.
How much does a website cost per month to run?
Plan for hosting, domain, security and updates. One UK guide suggests budgeting £500 to £2,500 a year for a typical small business site, and shared hosting is quoted at about £7 to £12 a month at renewal rates.
Do I own my website?
Not automatically. Ownership depends on who registered the domain, who holds the hosting account and what your contract says about design, code and content. Ask for these in writing before you pay.
Is a website builder good enough?
For a simple online presence it can be. Builders cost little upfront but can limit design, search optimisation and growth, and you may not be able to move the site. Compare them with what you need the site to do.
Should I choose a freelancer or an agency?
One UK developer argues a vetted freelancer gives better value for many £3,000 to £12,000 projects, while agencies offer a wider team and support. Judge on relevant examples, what is included and who answers when something breaks.
Are website prices shown with VAT?
Often not. Many UK quotes and platform prices are shown before VAT, so ask. Your accountant can advise whether you can reclaim it.
