How to Appear in ChatGPT and Other AI Search Tools (UK Guide)

None of the major AI tools publishes a formula for local recommendations, so anyone quoting one is guessing. What does help is the same foundation that helps in Google: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent business details across the web, genuine reviews, clear answer-first pages and mentions on trusted sites. No agency can guarantee you will be named.

Why AI search matters for local businesses

More answers now appear directly on the results page. Search Engine Land, reporting a SparkToro study, says 68% of Google searches in the US ended without a click in early 2026, and that click-through rates fall by nearly 60% when an AI Overview appears. The same coverage says branded, local business and high-intent searches are affected less than informational ones. This is US data, so treat it as a direction rather than a UK figure.

Customers also ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for recommendations, such as who is a reliable electrician in their town. Surveys on how many people do this vary and mostly come from vendors, so we do not quote a figure. What is clear is that being named in a short answer counts for more than being one of ten links.

How AI tools find local businesses

AI tools do not keep a secret list of businesses. When they answer a local question they typically run ordinary searches and read the pages that come back, such as your website, your Google Business Profile, directory listings and reviews. Google states that appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode needs no additional requirements or special optimisation beyond good search practice.

Several agencies add that AI tools treat mentions across multiple trusted sites as evidence that a business is real, and that they get confused when your name, address or description differ between sites. This is plausible, but the AI companies have not confirmed it. Agencies also report that a business can rank first on Google and still not be named by an AI tool.

Seven steps that help

  1. Complete and verify your Google Business Profile. Choose the right primary category, give real opening hours and fill every field. If yours is suspended, follow our recovery guide.
  2. Make your details identical everywhere. Use the same name, address, phone and description on your website, Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, LinkedIn and directories. Bing Places matters because several agencies report that ChatGPT draws on Bing-based search results.
  3. Earn genuine reviews. Volume, rating and recency feed both map results and AI summaries. Never reward reviews; read the UK rules on review incentives.
  4. Write answer-first pages. Put the question in a heading and the direct answer in the first sentence. Keep paragraphs short and self-contained, and use tables for comparisons and numbered lists for steps.
  5. Add structured data that matches the page. Use Organization or LocalBusiness details, plus FAQ markup for questions that are visible on the page. One 2026 audit of 4,407 small business websites reported that only 18.5% used LocalBusiness schema.
  6. Let crawlers read your site. Do not block search crawlers in robots.txt, keep key content in the page HTML rather than behind scripts, and submit a sitemap.
  7. Get mentioned by trusted sites. Local news, trade bodies, chambers of commerce, partners and industry directories all count. This takes time and cannot be guaranteed, but it is the signal agencies name most often.

What does not work

  • Promises. No one can guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation, and none of the major AI tools publishes a ranking formula for local businesses.
  • Special files. Some sites recommend an llms.txt file. Google says no special file or optimisation is required for its AI features. Adding one does no harm, but do not rely on it.
  • Fake or paid reviews. They are banned under UK consumer law and can get your profile suspended.
  • Keyword stuffing and copied text. Search engines and AI tools favour clear, original and accurate pages.

How to test whether AI names your business

Pick ten to twenty questions a customer might ask, in the words they would use. Examples: Who is a reliable plumber in your town? Which electrician near you has good reviews? What should I do if my Google listing is suspended? Run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and record whether your business is named, linked or missing.

Repeat the same questions every month so you can see a trend. Answers vary between runs, so look at the pattern across the set, not at one result.

Where to start this week

  1. Check that your Google Business Profile is complete, verified and not suspended.
  2. Search your business name and compare the name, address and phone in the first ten results. Fix any that differ.
  3. Look at the page that should bring enquiries. If visitors arrive but do not get in touch, work through nine checks for a website that gets no enquiries.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT decide which local business to recommend?

OpenAI and other AI companies do not publish a formula for local recommendations. When search is on, the tools run ordinary web searches and read listings, websites and reviews, so the signals are broadly those of local SEO: a complete profile, consistent details, genuine reviews and clear pages.

Does ranking number one on Google mean AI will recommend me?

No. Agencies report that a business can rank first on Google and still be missing from AI answers, because AI tools weigh mentions across several sources. A strong Google presence helps but does not guarantee a mention.

Is AI search optimisation different from SEO?

Mostly it is the same work. Google says optimising for its AI features is still search optimisation. The extra emphasis is on clear, quotable answers and consistent mentions across the wider web.

Can anyone guarantee I will appear in ChatGPT?

No. Be cautious of any agency that offers a guarantee, because none of the AI tools publishes how it chooses local businesses.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

No. Google states that no special file is needed for its AI features. You can add one, but it should not replace the basics above.

How long does it take to appear?

There is no reliable published timeframe. Changes to your website and profiles can be picked up as search tools re-read them, while the knowledge inside an AI model updates on the AI company’s schedule. Track monthly instead of expecting a date.

Do fake or paid reviews help?

No. They are banned under UK consumer law and can lead to a suspended profile. See what the UK rules say about rewarding reviews.
