Google Business Profile Suspended? How to Recover Your Listing

A suspended Google Business Profile usually means Google found a rule problem, such as a keyword-stuffed business name, a virtual office address, a duplicate listing or inaccurate details. Do not create a new listing. Find the cause, fix it on your profile and website, gather proof that the business is real, and then submit a reinstatement request through Google’s appeals tool.

What a suspended Google Business Profile means

A suspended Google Business Profile is a listing that Google has taken offline or locked because it believes the profile breaks its rules. The business can disappear from Google Search and Google Maps, often without a clear explanation. That means fewer calls, direction requests and website visits almost straight away.

Google normally emails the account linked to the profile and shows a notice inside it. Read that notice first, because it tells you what Google says is wrong. Suspensions are often recoverable, but only if the underlying problem is fixed before you appeal.

Why Google suspends business profiles

Agencies that handle suspensions regularly report the same causes. Check your profile against each one.

  • Keyword-stuffed business name. Adding services or places to the name, such as Best Plumber Near Me, is one of the fastest ways to trigger a suspension. Use the name on your signage and paperwork.
  • Virtual office, PO box or coworking address. An address without permanent staff or a real presence can be flagged.
  • Address or service-area problems. Claiming a location where you do not operate, or a service area you cannot support, causes trouble.
  • Duplicate listings. Two profiles for the same business can both be affected.
  • Inaccurate or inconsistent details. Hours, phone number, category or website that do not match reality, or other sites, raise flags.
  • Fake or manipulated reviews. See our guide to the UK rules on rewarding reviews.
  • Verification skipped or done wrongly. Incomplete or failed verification can end in suspension.
  • A suspended account manager. If the Google account that manages the listing is suspended, the listing can be affected too.

What to do first: fix, prove, then appeal

Work through these steps in order.

  1. Read the notice in your profile and any email to the owner account, and note the date.
  2. Do not create a new listing. Specialist advice is consistent: a second listing for the same business can be treated as a duplicate and make things worse.
  3. Find the likely cause. Compare the list above with your profile: name, address, category, hours, website and phone.
  4. Fix it everywhere. Update the profile and your website so they match each other. Use the same business name, address and phone on directories and social profiles.
  5. Gather proof that the business is real. Typical evidence includes Companies House or trading documents, a recent utility bill or lease in the business name, photos of the premises, signage and branded vehicles, and any trade licences.
  6. Submit the reinstatement request once, through the Google Business Profile appeals tool, after the fixes are in place. Appealing before you have fixed the cause is described as the most common mistake.
  7. Be patient. Repeated edits and repeated appeals can slow things down. Watch the email linked to the profile for Google’s reply.

If verification keeps failing

Repeated verification failures often happen at the video step, when Google cannot clearly confirm the location. Typical advice from specialists:

  • Record one continuous video without cuts.
  • Show nearby roads, the entrance and any signage so the location can be matched to the address.
  • Show the inside of the premises and the tools, stock or equipment used to run the business.
  • For a service business, show branded vehicles or equipment and proof that you operate from the address.
  • Check that the profile details match what the video shows.

If no verification option appears at all, complete every profile field, remove duplicates and contact Google Business Profile support to ask for another method. If a former owner, employee or agency created the listing, you may first need ownership transferred to you.

How to avoid a suspension

  • Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on signage and paperwork.
  • Use a real address with a permanent presence. If you do not serve customers there, hide the address and set a service area.
  • Remove duplicate listings instead of leaving them.
  • Keep hours, phone, website and categories current and consistent with your website.
  • Ask customers for honest reviews and never reward them. Follow the UK rules on review incentives.
  • Check who has manager access every few months and remove anyone you do not trust.

A healthy profile matters beyond Maps. It is one of the first things AI tools use when they look for local businesses, as we explain in our guide to how to appear in ChatGPT and other AI search tools. If your website is the next weak point, see nine checks when your website gets no enquiries.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?

The usual causes are a business name with added keywords, a virtual office or PO box address, duplicate listings, inaccurate details, fake reviews or incomplete verification. The notice in your profile gives Google’s reason. Match it against your profile and fix the cause before you appeal.

How long does reinstatement take?

We could not find a published guaranteed timeframe from Google, and anyone who promises one is guessing. Fix the cause, submit one clear appeal with evidence, and watch the email linked to the profile. Repeated appeals can slow things down.

Should I create a new listing?

No. Specialists advise against it, because a new profile for the same business can be treated as a duplicate and cause a second suspension. Correct the problems on the existing profile and appeal.

Can I use a virtual office or PO box?

Guides on suspensions list virtual offices, PO boxes and coworking spaces without permanent staff as common triggers. Google’s eligibility guidelines decide what is allowed, so check them before using any address. If you do not serve customers at your address, use a service area instead.

Can I put keywords in my business name?

No. Use your real-world name. Adding services or places, such as Best Plumber Near Me, is one of the quickest ways to be suspended.

What if my old agency set up the listing?

This is common. You may need the previous owner or agency to add you as an owner or transfer ownership. Ask for access in writing and check the list of managers on the profile.
